How do you maintain a commercial drip coffee maker?
Sep 06, 2006 by Ron | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
We have a Bunn coffee maker that has a "two pot" water reservoir, so when you add water there is an instant brewing process because there already is hot water inside. This week I noticed that the flow was literally down to a drip, now it takes triple the time to brew a pot of coffee. How do I get it to flow better? All I see is the vinegar method, but I'm afraid, with the reservoir, that I'll never be able to get all the vinegar rinsed out. I've heard of the term "delime." Is there any special procedure or product for this?
I've done the vinegar method. It worked for me. There wasn't any left over flavor or anything.
The de-lime thing is about cleaning out the spout where the water comes out over the coffee grounds. That sprayer thing unscrews and you can clean under there but you have to empty the pot first.

How do you remove the brown discoloring on a white drip coffee maker?
Oct 10, 2007 by jack p | Posted in Cleaning & Laundry
I have a white Mr Coffee coffee maker that is easy to clean except for one place. That is the part just above the drip basket, where the hot water drips into the basket. The basket is also discoloring, but not as much as the above part. I have tried formula 409 and scorering powder but it has little effect.
I know exactly what you are talking about. I use the green scrubby side of a sponge, works every time.;)

Jun 17, 2007 by Gary L | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I am interested in the electric load required to run a small Mr. Coffee type drip coffee maker - either in watts or amps. The one I uses is a very small one - 4 cup capacity, but I expect the heating element is the same as the larger (8, 12 cup) models.
yep look on the bottom name plat it ill say voltage watts example 1,500 watts at 120 volts is = to 12.5 amps

Coffee Beans - How long to grind for drip coffee maker?
May 29, 2007 by Doodlestuff | Posted in Non-Alcoholic Drinks
I recently joined Seattle Coffee Direct and received coffee beans and Cuisinart coffee grinder. I always just bought ground or ground it using the machine at the grocery store. So, I need advice. How many coffee beans do I put in for a pot of coffee? How long do I grind it to get the right grind for my drip coffee maker? How long do I grind for my percolator (yes, I have one of those too).
I have a different grinder, so you might need to experiment with yours. I almost fill the grinder cup (leave some room), and grind while counting to 10. This makes just a little more than enough coffee for a 10-pot coffee pot. This is drip. I haven't used a perc in a long time! Hope this helps.

Is there a downside to using already hot water in an automatic drip coffee maker?
May 10, 2007 by Nicholas H | Posted in Other - Food & Drink
The instructions on my automatic drip coffee maker say to always use cold water, but I don't understand why it would make a difference. Since I like my coffee hot, I like to use hot water. I don't see what the problem is. Anyone got an explanation? Is it bad for the machine?
I assume you mean hot TAP water. If so, then not only is it bad for your coffee maker, it's also a waste of time.
Hot water, straight from the faucet, contains more dissolved minerals (calcium, assorted salts, etc) than cold water does. It's simply because of the temperature...more solids can be dissolved in hot water than in cold.
The same minerals that cause the scaling and "hard water" deposits in your bathtub will also clog up your Mr. Coffee. There are coffee machine cleaners (chemicals) that help remove these deposits, but eventually they'll build up so badly that the machine is ruined. Using hot water, rather than cold, will ultimately shorten the life of your coffee maker.
Also, the brewing temperature for most coffee machines is just about 170 degrees F; the "holding" temperature (the temperature on the hotplate) is usually a few degrees higher.
If you pour hot water into the reservoir, it won't affect the end-product coffee's temperature. Actually the same thing would be true if you filled the reservoir with ice! You'd end up with coffee of the same temperature as always...but it would take alot longer to brew, because the ice would have to melt first.
