How to remove "rust" spots on the outside of my stainless dishwasher & fridge?

I have stainless appliances and the outside of the dishwasher and now the bottom of the refrigerator are forming rust spots (or so it appears), how can I safely remove without using an abrasive that would scratch. I have heard olive oil?
Please help!
Barkeepers Friend is the best way to remove things like that. While it is a VERY light abraisive, it will not scratch. Make a paste with Barkeepers Friend and a bit of water and gently rub, it will come off wonderfully. You can find it on the regular household cleaning aisle, it is usually on the very bottom or very top shelf, it comes in a can and is very inexpensive.

I know you can but all of our appliances are over 8 years old. Our white dishwasher just went out and I want to change everything to stainless steel. My husband said we can just get the stainless steel dishwasher and replace everything else as they die out. Wouldn't that look tacky?
Tacky is not the word to use, but it wouldn't look right to mix appliances.
We replaced one major appliance a year, moving from white to stainless.
This mismatched appliances did look odd for two years, but it was so easy to tell guests, "hey, we're switching over to stainless." This almost always led to a fun conversation where they got excited for how great our kitchen was going to look.
And now it does look great! I love the stainless look, and they're a cinch to keep clean once you find the right cleaner. I'd do this over again exactly the same way.

My dad washed car parts in my mom stainless steel viking dishwasher and now it's filthy! Safe cleaning tips?
run dishwasher on empty with 1 cup of tang powder form. Yes the stuff you drink. or if no tang. replace with 1 cup of borax and 1/2 cup of vinegar, place on top rack in a quick wash.......either one will do the trick .

I am trying to remove something from the front of my brushed stainless steel dishwasher. I had a repair guy out for another problem and he thought it was silicone (I don't think so) and he though he removed some of it... but I can still see it. Is there some sort of a scrub that I can safely use?

Our several-year old dishwasher when using a powder cleaner leaves the stainless silverware with what looks like sterling silver that's not been polished in a long time; Further, we get a "film" on our plastic glassware.
