How long before frozen chicken and meat goes bad?

I ask this because my mother buys chicken from the a warehouse where they keep chickens and other animals like pigs.
She buys the chicken and the meat and cuts the bad stuff out of it before putting it in the freezer.

She puts the meat inside a small bag and puts in the freezer. She leaves it there for like 5 days to a month before we eat it.

Now, I read stuff that chicken goes bad after 5 days?! Nothing has happened to me and I have eaten chicken like this for 14 years!

I just want to know if something bad will happen to my health.

What do you think of this science project?

TITLE
Does the temperature influence the growth of a salt garden?

HYPOTHESIS
In warm conditions the salt crystals will grow more than those growing in colder conditions.

MATERIAL LIST
15 Cement Bricks halves
1 and 1/2 cups of Water
1/2 cup of Salt
5 Aluminum Pans
1 Jar
1 Measuring cup
1 Wooden Spoon

PROCEDURE
We combined 1/2 cup of salt into a jar containing 1 and 1/2 cups of water. We mixed them together until the salt was not visible in the water. We put three halves of brick into each aluminum pan. Then we poured the salt water mixture over the bricks. We did the same for the other 4 pans. We placed the first pan in living area, the second in a basement, the third outside, the fourth in a bedroom, and the fifth in a freezer. We let the pans sit overnight in their areas. The following day we checked on them.

DATA
Temperature of living area: 69 degrees
Temperature of basement: 58 degrees
Temperature outside: 53 degrees
Temperature of bedroom: 72 degrees
Temperature of freezer: 20 degrees

RESULTS
We checked on the bricks the next day. We went to the living area and found some some salt on the top of the bricks. We went down to the basement and fount no salt crystals on the bricks, but could see some salt inside the bricks. We went outside and found a big group of salt crystals on one side of the brick. Then in the bedroom there were a little bit of salt crystals on each brick. The bricks in the freezer had cracked and had no salt visible on them.
We see salt crystals "grow" on the surface of the brick because, by capillary action, the salt water is drawn up through small holes in the brick until it reached the top or sides. The water evaporates into the air and leaves the salt behind. In the end, the salt grew most on the bricks that were located in an area where there was a significant amount of sun. Outside the bricks were facing the sun and in the living area the bricks were in front of a window, which explains why the salt grew the most on them.

CONCLUSION
We didn't expect the outside bricks to have so much salt and same for the living area ones. We were half right, half wrong. We noticed that the salt crystals "grew" on all the bricks except the ones in the freezer. The most salt on the bricks was outside but the least was, besides the freezer, in the basement. The water evaporates more easily and faster in places that have more sun and oxygen, and the air outside contains lots of sun oxygen. So indeed, the temperature does affect the growth of a salt garden, but it's mostly the sun that creates heat which lets the water evaporate, leaving the salt behind on top of the bricks.

For everyone who breeds their pets.....After reading this how could you?

Education people, EDUCATION!! Let's pray that 2009 spares more lives than the 11 million killed this year...

(do not stop reading until you've reached the end)

A Letter from a Shelter Manager:

I think our society needs a huge " Wake-up" call.

As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all. ..a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day.

Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know. That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore.

So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays" that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are;

"We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving to that doesn't allow pets and why did you choose that place instead of a pet friendly home?

Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get?

"We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10- 12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs!

"She' s tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family?

They always tell me: "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog."

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies.

Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps.

It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it.

If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose.

If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door. Those dogs just don't get adopted.

It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are. If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed.

If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long.

Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment.

If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down".. ..

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk - happy, wagging their tails.

Until, they get to "The Room", every one of them freak out and put the brakes on when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them.

Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are.

Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff".

Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams.

They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pet's corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage.

What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was ju
You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much further than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this: DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is.

I just hope I maybe changed one person's mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog.

I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt." THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT!
Blonde Bombshell - If it doesn't apply to you or your dogs why are you offended? You should still be concerned about people breeding inferior pets that only add to the over population of this country and yes this is in the US.
This is not directed at legitimate breeders ya'll. I bought my Rottweiler from a very good breeder who has done everything for the breed. I have no qualms with legitimate breeders. This is for all the people who post on yahoo answers saying crap like, should be breed my malti poo to my chihuahua? They are so cute, and exactly what would I call their offspring. Matipoohua's? Come on you guys, you see it over and over on yahoo answers every day. People ask idiotic questions like one this morning that said, oh my momma dog just pulled too hard on the umbilical cord and pulled the intestines out of the puppy....what should I do.....well duh, get your bitch spayed and take that puppy to the vet. The number of Back Yard Breeders on Yahoo Answers amazes me.

This broke my heart and I fully understand this. I agree it isnt just the strays or petstore dogs but it is the pure breed dogs as well. Dogs are not items to buy to just look good they are beings that feel as we do. I pray that everyone opens their eyes to see the only place to get a dog to love is from a shelter. I recently just learned this as well cause my dog had puppies and I really got upset when someone said anything negative about it. I know now though even though they are well taken care of and loved that I could have saved that many animals from a shelter. I hope from now on that I can help others understand this as well. It does not matter what breed it is or if it is a pure breed dog. It matters that they need love and someone to save them from death. Congrats on posting this because everyone needs to be informed and reminded about the sufferings dogs go through each day. God Bless

How do i mix my breast milk with formula? PEASE HELP?

first let me start with i am giving my son bm but i pump it and give it to him in a bottle because he was born a month in a half early so he had to stay in NICU and by the time we were able to bring him home he got so used to being bottle fed he wouldnt latch on and yes i tried breastfeeding in the hospital but he was too small and couldnt latch on! ok so my baby just turned 3 months old and i am running low on breast milk..well actually it isnt that im running low just im not producing enough for him to take he is now taking 4 1/2 sometimes 5 ounces and i only pump 3 maybe 3 1/2 ounces and that just isnt enough cux when he finishes his bottle and there was only 3 or the 3 1/2 ounces he starts screeming and i feel horrible like im straving him so i started using my freezer supply and now im on the last one and i only have enough for about two more feedings and he eats EVERY three hours like clock work it sucks when i try to sleep at night :) but anyways i really really dont want to give him formula but i know i have to i just feel bad like im letting him down but i keep telling myself at least he got only breast milk for the last 3 months! so i heard the other mothers would continue to give breast milk and formula now i want to know how to do this! i dont want to give him straight formula until he is at least 6 months old so not until april but how do i mix the formula and bm? i have the powdered formula what is the best way to prepare it i know what the directions say but i just want other mothers experience! i watched my friend do it once and she would boil tap water in a regular pot then poor it into a container with a lid and put it in the fridge (she only made enough to last about a day i guess cuz you have to keep it fresh and boiled idk) anyways so where do i go from there do i take the water after boiling it and mix it with formula or do i have to let it cool first then mix it and warm it? also i know i would want to mix the formula with water and then add the bm but do i add them all together then heat it? im sooo confused? and if he takes 4 to 4 1/2 ounces of breast milk would i still need to prepare the same with formula for example lets say i pump and i get 3 ounces of breast milk to i then only make an 1 1/2 ounces of formula to mix with it or do i make less since it is thicker? idk im very confused lol im sorry if im confusing im just a first time mom and i dont exacltly know how to do certaing things i like getting other mothers experience! please be very descriptive so pretty much explain to me how you prepare the formula and if you also did the mixing of bm and formula explain how you did that to me as well! thank you soo much! and please dont preech to me or paste from another site the benifits of bm cuz i ALREADY know which is why i was giving him bm BUT i just cant produce enough and believe me i am trying everything to get my supply up it is just very hard so i HAVE to start formula to keep my child healthy and gaining weight not losing it! my doctor recommend soy formula is that better then the rest? but right now all i have is a can of similac the one for gassy babies it was a free sample so its only an 8 ounce can but its better then nothing for now cuz i dont get paid till wed!! and should i like up the formula so for instance if i only pump 2 oz one time do i give that all to him and mix 2 oz of formula? then if i pump 3oz next time do i give that all plus the 1 oz of formula or should i just slowly take away all breast milk? or can i do the mixture thing as long as i can get bm? or do i need to eventually give him all formula and not mix it? please help thank you!
