Question on Fossil Fuels : COal?

okay. so i have to do something with coal for homework. I'm researching everywhere to find out generally what coal is. I only find out how its made.

Which of the following below best matches with coal?
-energy from heat inside earth
-energy from flowing water
-energy from wood and waste and garbage
-energy from splitting atoms
-portable fossil fuel used in grills
-fossil fuel for cars, trucks and jets
-fossil fuel gas moved by pipeling
-energy in rays from the sun/

The energy in coal comes from the energy stored by plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago, when the earth was partly covered with swampy forests. For millions of years, a layer of dead plants at the bottom of the swamps was covered by layers of water and dirt, trapping the energy of the dead plants. The heat and pressure from the top layers helped the plant remains turn into what we today call coal.

HOW COAL IS USED
About 92 percent of the coal used in the United States, is for generating electricity. Except for a small amount of net exports, the rest of the coal is used, as a basic energy source in many industries, including, steel, cement and paper. The four major uses of coal are:

FOR ELECTRIC POWER
Coal is used to generate almost half of all electricity produced in the United States. Besides electric utility companies, industries and businesses with their own power plants use coal to generate electricity. Power plants burn coal to make steam. The steam turns turbines which generate electricity.

FOR INDUSTRY
A variety of industries use coal's heat and by-products. Separated ingredients of coal (such as methanol and ethylene) are used in making plastics, tar, synthetic fibers, fertilizers, and medicines. The concrete and paper industries also burn large amounts of coal.

FOR MAKING STEEL
Coal is baked in hot furnaces to make coke, which is used to smelt iron ore into iron needed for making steel. It is the very high temperatures created from the use of coke that gives steel the strength and flexibility for products such as bridges, buildings, and automobiles.

From your features the best will be: fossil fuel used in grills.

Grills...Gas or Charcoal?

I'm looking for a little grill, like one of the portable ones that you can just put on a table, but is gas or charcoal better..as far as the taste of the food and being easy to work with... which costs more to refill?

For portable, you are essentially talking about an Hibachi... They are nice little grills. They are also charcoal only.

Now...do yourself a favour...NEVER cook with it indoors, and make sure you put something heat proof and fire proof under it before you place it on a flammable surface (like a wooden picnic table).

You will have "purists" who claim that you should only use charcoal, and you'll have others saying gas is better. Both have their points, but essentially it comes down to the fact that gas is easier, charcoal is faster, charcoal adds flavours, where gas doesn't.

Good Luck

EDIT: Can't tell about the regional companies, but BK uses GAS grills. Why? You need a special license and extra (expen$ive) fire supression for indoor charcoal grills!
ALSO...charcoal cooks with radiant heat...if they're burning, they're TOO hot to cook on! Any flames you may see are due to grease/fat dripping through the grill and igniting on the coals.

Can I use a pot or pan on a portable grill? I am looking for a new camping grill and am not sure what to buy

I had a standard Coleman gas one with a burner on one side and a grill on the other. It just broke so I need to buy a new stove and/or grill. If I buy a portable gas grill without a burner can I put a pot, pan or coffee percolator on it? Also, if I get one of these... Is it safe to use lava rocks or briquettes? Won't this help with heat distribution? So far the Weber Go-Anywhere Grill looks like something that might work but I am not sure about the above questions. Thanks a ton!

The Weber Go-Anywhere grill is great. Of course you can put a pot on it and use it like a stove. The thing I like about the Weber's is the temp is easy to control. I use the propane model, but Briquettes are fine on the other models, not on the propane ones though.

how do you light coleman portable mini gas grill?

Turn on the gas. Hold a lit match or lighter at the gas valve inside the grill. It should light.

portable gas grill for camping?

we have a fire and ice thermos grill and LOVE it however we camp A LOT and over the yrs have worn it out lol I need a new grill but cant find anything I like as well as the fire & ice grill. The main thing I liked about it was the cooking surface... it was just one big solid piece...it had ridges on 3/4 of it but it was solid kinda like a ridged griddle... the grease went into a container not into the flames below. The other 1/4 of it was smooth. Does anyone know of a griddle similar to this??? Or have an recommendations???
I wish they still made them but they dont... they are discontinued

they still make them .........get another one or here is one close to it
