What is the best method for disinfecting a backyard BBQ grill that appears to have had rat droppings?
Jan 14, 2009 by Sarah M | Posted in Rodents
It is a propane grill and I removed the rat droppings from the flame area beneath the actual grill. I would like to continue using the grill but am concerned about potential food contamination when grilling. I appreciate any disinfecting advice.
Can I hook up my propane grill to the gas line on my porch?
Jan 11, 2009 by Ryan G | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
The new house I moved into has a connector on the porch to hook up a grill. The gas man said it has to be a special natural gas burning grill. My dad says "Gas is Gas". Which one is correct?
No...Gas is not Gas!
Propane and Natural Gas burn at different pressures and have different btu values.
If you have an expensive propane BBQ it might be worth contacting the manufacturer to get a conversion kit. Some people may tell you to get different orifices and install them yourself. Well...Don't! You need the proper conversion kit, because it will also contain a rating plate for that BBQ for natural gas. If you don't have this, and that bbq is involved in any kind of fire or injury, the manufacturer will take no responsibility because you have "altered" the appliance. Also insurance companies have denied claims for damages because of this very reason. If it's a cheapy model you are probably better off to just buy a new one set up for natural gas.

What is the right way to dispose of propane cylinders?
Jan 10, 2009 by dulladdress | Posted in Other - Home & Garden
I use them with my grill and now I don't know how to get rid of them. They don't give you any clues on the can. Should I just toss them in the trash?
These are the little campstove size cylinders.
We mark the empties when we remove them from the grill or heater as empty and toss them. http://www.ehow.com/how_2209999_dispose-propane-tank.html
Coleman as a special device for marking their empties.

Trouble with Propane Tank?
Jan 02, 2009 by llnlkn | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I turned my propane tank off and unhooked it from grill. Now when I hook it back up to grill the propane will not turn on. It is like the turn on knob is locked. Anyone know about this and what to do or am I stuck just turning it in and getting a full tank?
it maybe that you did not tighten it enough although I can't say for sure I know they have a check valve that won't let the gas out unless it's tightend to the point it pushes on the valve

What is cheaper: propane or charcoal?
Jan 01, 2009 by Sb T | Posted in Other - Food & Drink
My propane grill has had it - I am going to bury it this week. So I need a new grill. What is cheaper annually - propane or charcoal? And - Which do you prefer and why? Thanks!
Propane will run you cheaper and allow you faster to heat times than charcoal.
That being said there is some satisfaction and flavor shifts that occur when you run with charcoal. I recommend lump wood charcoal as opposed to the briquets/mass market formulaes as they leave your food tasting perhaps more synthetic.
Lump wood charcoal is actual charcoal made from real wood. Using a "chimney" as a starter and migrating the coals out takes about 10-15m depending on wind. The flavor imparted is more "grill" like. Hint of smoke, deeper base flavors.
A chargoal grill takes a bit more thought, a bit more effort, but gives you a bit more because of it.
If your life right now is very rush rush, then propane will get you through. I've burnt through several. ;-) However if food means more than just a nutrient uptake and you want something that delivers quality, I recommend charcoal. Eventually think about acquiring both. Or a smoker and propane grill.
Either way, enjoy your upcoming purchase future grill master.
