Hand Cranked Ice Cream Maker??
Where can I find a pretty cheap hand cranked ice cream maker?? I would prefer to get it at an actual store, not at an online store. Price range under $120 PLEASE! And if it helps any, I am located in TN.
I was hoping for cheaper than $140, but its a B-Day present for my dad. He loves homemade ice cream, but only from a hand crank maker!! Go figure!!
my family has made homemade ice cream for over twenty years. we do it by crank also and it is not that hard if you have a good bucket and crank. we have the rival one thats like 150 but i found one by a company called aroma thats only 90. im not familar with the company but it looks like its a good quality. also it is only available online. very few ppl seem to want to hand crank their ice cream anymore.

There is something about summertime that allows us to experience nostalgia--perhaps it is the strong scents in the air, the lingering twilight, the rich sounds of birdsong, the afternoon laze when the world seems to slow down...all of these things bring memories to the surface. A lot of those memories are summertime memories, it seems: thoughts of the times in our lives that have taken on a patina, have been limned with the gold of youth, for we all feel a little younger in the summer.
It is funny, but the simplest things become treasures in our memory. For myself, one of the things I remember about summer is sitting on the lawn, eating melon with salt and pepper---and making homemade ice cream, of course!
When the family gathered in the summer, we always had to make two types of ice cream: vanilla, and coca-cola. The coca-cola ice cream was at the insistence of our great-grandmother, who loved it. It was our job as children to work the hand-cranked ice cream maker.
Such simple pleasures, but making for dear memories. What are some of your favourite summertime memories?
Waiting for it to rain... hearing the thunder... heat still sweltering on my sunburnt back as I ran home from the river in golden afternoon sunlight... the change of breeze from hot to soothing cool... the smell of wet dust as the first sprinkles come... the teeming hard pelts of rain like small rocks pelting down on my hands as I tried to protect my head with my towel.... the mad dash across the park barefoot through bindies to get home in time for dinner... the huge puddles of water left after the rain... the clear sweet smell of fresh air I can still taste if I close my eyes and concentrate... making boats out of our flip flops and sailing them down the street gutters... good friends the kind you think will last forever.. like moments where time stood still.

Is it possible to "over-churn" ice cream in a hand cranked ice cream maker?
Probably not. If it isn't setting, it needs more churning. It takes a while.

Betty, how well I remember. As far back as I can remember anything. All the many times that we cranked that wooden ice cream freezer or went where it was being cranked. We kids all wanted the paddles. Ice cream seemed best there. We took our turns to sit on the towel covered freezer as it was being cranked & getting hard to turn. ~~
I wanted my children to grow up with that memorie. I saved green stamps till I had enough to get one.
My first born brought her man friend from N.J to Tex. & we had a huge picnic at a park. Topped it off with Old fashion crank icecream. You could tell he was enjoying himself more than anyone. When he returned to N.J he wrote me the nicest letter about Texas hospitality & how he will never forget the making of that ice cream & how delicious it was. I still have that letter & will always remember that special time. ~~~~~
