Making Congee on stove-top?

I was told that congee takes 6-8 hours to make, and that I need a $100 rice-cooker. Has anyone successfully made plain congee on the stovetop? I've tried using 8 cups of water to 1 cup of rice for 3 hours, and ended up with, basically, sticky rice. I've had the real thing in Chinatown, and it's more like a soup. P.S. Not so concerned with an exotic flavor, I basically want to know how to make this because it "agrees" with me in the morning, in its "plain" form. Thanks, and Help!

The rice cooker: small (1-3 cups), not too expensive, the kind that plugs into a wall, and not the kind that claims to make your rice really fluffy (I want to be able to make the food I used to eat in Japan).
The situation: Currently I live in a small town in New York and go to college in another one. Neither town sells rice cookers. I have no car. I'm getting driven to the Bronx Zoo for a day to do research soon and I probably won't be able to go much of anywhere else in the city, but I'd like to pick up a rice cooker, and maybe the right kind of rice, while I'm somewhere that might have them. Which stores should I visit?
or, i suppose, anywhere on the way there would do... i'll be coming from the general direction of Albany.

Don't have the manuel and can't find troubleshooting online i.e. google. Yan's website just has recipies these days.... how can I find out what the code is? and how to fix it.... I need rice to bone up for my next sumo match....

Rice Cooker Recipe : Curry Chicken
If you adoration to use rice cooker to cook simple meal and love my early post that using rice cooker to cook spaghetti, then I might have this another uncomplicated rice cooker recipe for you to try out.
The Curry Chicken.
Hmm, I love curry chicken, and using rice cooker to cook curry chicken can be acquiescent as 123:)
Well here is the recipes:
Ingredients To Prepare
2 tablespoons oil
2 cups water
1 cup chopped onion
2 tablespoons curry right
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sass
1 (8 ounce) package zatarain’s jambalaya mix
3/4 cup campo yogurt
1/2 cup golden raisin
1/3 cup chopped cashews
Passage By Step Instruction:
Hit Cook and place oil in pan then Add onion and garlic; cook and stir 5 minutes or until onion is sympathetic.
Add curry powder; cook and stir 2 minutes.
Add water, tomato disrespect, Jambalaya Mix chicken and raisins mix well.
Close Lid and hit COOK after cooker switched over to Warm whirl off the Rice cooker and stir in yogurt.
Let stand 5 minutes. Sprinkle with cashews.
Now, it’s ready to call:)
