Can canning jars be simmered for a couple of hours?
Dec 22, 2008 by No, You Don't Know Me | Posted in Cooking & Recipes
I'm making tamales. I have a bamboo steamer, but no small pot to set it on, but I have a big pot to put it IN. I need to lift it up off the bottom of the pot and wondered if I put 2 canning jars in there (on their sides, not bottoms) and set the steamer on top of them, would the jars break during the 1.5 hours the tamales are supposed to steam? Whaddya think?
I don't see why they wouldn't be acceptable, although I might add that you might want to use three, as it will add more stability than two will.....Remember, canning jars are meant to withstand pressure canning as well as "hot bath" methods, too, so they should stand up to long steaming in boiling water without any problem whatsoever....Enjoy your tamales!!! Happy Holidays.........

How can I clean the fishy smell from my bamboo steamer? I steamed shrimp in it, but the smell won't go away.?

I rinsed and rinsed. And poured baking soda on it to no avail. Should I use soap on bamboo?
you might try letting it soak with some vinegar in it. if the smell is going to come out, vinegar will do the job

How can i build my own crab steamer?
Nov 11, 2008 by Ladybug | Posted in Cooking & Recipes
I have a bamboo steamer, but someone told me that if i use it for the crabs then the bamboo will keep the flor of the fish.... is there a way to build a homemade steamer without spending alot of money? I can't remeber this episode... but alton brown once made one... can you help me find it....
a pot of boiling water and a colander or large mesh strainer. You have a steamer. I would avoid using the bamboo - I would be afraid of a lasting fish smell.

Can i steam lobster/crab with my bambo steamer?
Nov 10, 2008 by Ladybug | Posted in Cooking & Recipes
This is the steamer i have... if i can steam my crabs how long do i steam them for?http://www.willowwindfarms.com/images/Health_Points/bamboo%20steamer.jpg
is there any way to flavor the water when steaming the crab so the crab will have some taste....
About 6 - 7 minutes if you are talking about pre-cooked alaskan king crab. If you are talking about uncooked crab then about 15 minutes.
Your steamer is fine for cooking crab.

If you are cooking blue crab then I would flavor the water with 1-2 tablespoons of old bay seasoning and 1/4 cup vinegar. If you are cooking alaskan king then I recommend skipping the seasoning. That crab has a wonderful natural flavor that you don't want tainted.
