Opinions on garment steamers?

I am looking to buy a garment steamer and have found mixed reviews for each one I have looked at. Does anyone have an opinion as to which brands create the best results? I am not as worried about price as I am about satisfactory results, ease of use and durability. So far, I have been researching Jiffy, Homedics, Rowenta and Conair. Each of these brands seem to have similar features - any opinions on these brands or any others I may have missed? Thanks!!
I am planning on using it on clothes with the hopes of eliminating ironing. Business shirts and slacks - those sorts of things.

What are you planning on using it for/on? Clothes, drapes/curtains, etc.? Also, if clothes, are you looking for something to take the place of using an iron, or, just for stuff like suits and other special stuff like that? Different models are better for different things.

I want to clean out my Jiffy steamer model J-3 but don't want to buy the jiffy steam cleaner online.?

Any household products that can help me clean out and built up hard water or calcium deposits? I heard vinegar but am wondering if anything else may work like baking soda?

vinegar will do just fine. mix 1/2 cup vinegar in hot water and leave it in overnight. Will be clean in the morning.
Same for teapots and stuff.

Garment steamer - does it work well on cotton, cotton/spandex blends?

I'm thinking of buying a garment steamer (the Jiffy J-2000, to be precise). I'm sick of ironing and my style is such that most of my clothes require it.

Most of the clothes I would like to use the steamer on are skirts and dresses that are either cotton or a cotton/spandex blend. Will the steamer work well on these fabrics? Also have a few rayon and polyester dresses I'd like to steam... will it work well on these? Are there any fabrics that the steamer will not work as well on?

And I already know not to expect perfect, crisp results from the steamer as I would get from ironing. :)

Thanks, I appreciate your help!

Steamers are great as long as you use distilled water and a pinch of salt. For stretchie fabrics just hold the steamer a little further away from the material as you don't want it getting too hot and melting the stretch in it. Happy steaming.

Any idea where I can find a store in Toronto that sell "Jiffy Steamer"?

Arora Electric (located on Bloor St.) carries Conair Fabric Steamers which are like Jiffy Steamers.
See here (scroll down): http://aroraelectric.com/HS_Irons.htm

If not, you may have to order it online through Eddie's in Vancouver.

There may be other suppliers out there that I've over-looked. You might have to contact Jiffy Steamer directly to find a dealer near you.

My Jiffy Steamer isn't working, what am I doing wrong?

I have a J-4000 Jiffy Steamer. I've preheated the water then when I switch it to "steam" it warms up and steam comes out but then it starts spitting scalding hot water. I'm holding it upright and I have the water level right. Any ideas?

Sounds like water calcium build up. Try some vinegar to clean it. Put straight vinegar in it, turn it on. Then empty and rinse well. My steamer recomended distilled water only.
Good luck.
